Scope and Contents
Unpublished manuscript about the life of William J. Howlett, a priest and writer. He describes his childhood in New York and Michigan, recounts his family's wagon journey to Denver along the Platte River in 1865, and his student days in the Seminary. Returning to Colorado, he embarked on mission and parish work under Bishop Joseph Machebeuf, whose biography he later published. This work provides glimpses of the growth of the Colorado Church in the last quarter of the 19th century. Note: Photocopy only. Original on file at the Catholic Register.

Biographical / Historical
William J. Howlett was a pioneer Catholic priest who moved to Colorado in 1865. He taught two years in a parochial school established by Bishop Machebeuf. Howlett studied for the priesthood in Kentucky and France and was ordained in 1876 in Paris. He returned to Colorado and served in Denver, Central City, Brighton, Sterling, Pueblo, Georgetown, Colorado City, and Loveland. After 36 years in the Denver diocese, he became chaplain of the Sisters of Loretto motherhouse in Kentucky.
